The booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be offered to all eligible adults, regardless of the vaccine type received for their first and second shots, Bendigo Health chairman Bob Cameron said.
More COVID-19 news:
"We've started providing booster shots now and people can either walk in to our Mollison Street vaccination hub or book in online," he said.
"They will need to bring proof of their first two COVID-19 vaccinations before they will be able to get the booster.
"We know booster shots are really effective in giving people that extra immunity boost so we're very keen to get people in and jabbed when they're able to do it.
"This is definitely a positive step in the right direction."
Mr Cameron said there wasn't a "huge number" of eligible in Bendigo at the moment, but he expected that number to increase over the next few months.
"We think there are about 1500 eligible people in Bendigo at the moment so we have the doses to cover them," he said.
"But we will continue to get enough doses as those numbers increase in the coming months."
The booster dose will be offered to people over the age of 18 and who had their second COVID-19 vaccination over six months ago.
Mr Cameron said Bendigo Health would also begin giving booster shots to state-run aged care residents from next week.
The doses will be available at state-run clinics and mass vaccination hubs. Eligible people can also receive a booster from their GP and from participating pharmacies.
A Pfizer booster shot after a second dose reduces a person's risk of hospitalisation with the coronavirus by 93 per cent.
