HUNTLY coach Stacy Fiske says he's buoyed by the club's emerging talent coming through the ranks as the Hawks look set to field a vastly new-look side next year.
The Hawks have experienced a high turnover of players since the Heathcote District league season finished, with a cohort joining new Calivil United coach Jack Daley at the Demons and four players, including triple Cheatley medallist Ryan Semmel, headed to Stanhope.
"From the outside it might look like we've lost a lot of players, but we've known about this for a few months and been planning on how we want to move forward and how the team will look and we're really excited about 2022," Fiske said at the weekend.
"We've got such good young talent coming through from our under-18s, which is something Huntly probably hasn't had for as long as I've been at the club where we've got kids coming through that we can rely on and we don't have to go out and recruit too heavily."
The Hawks were a dominant force in the HDFNL's under-18 competition this year and would have been short-priced favourites to win the flag had the season not been called off prior to finals.
The Hawks were undefeated with a percentage of 514.7 in the under-18 competition
On the recruiting front, the Hawks have announced five arrivals, including three from Maiden Gully YCW - Travis Mercadante, who is returning to the club, Tori Ferguson and Luke Gray - as well as defender Orion Downing from Bears Lagoon-Serpentine and Jye Moon from Eaglehawk.
The pacy Mercadante is likely to be used as an attacking half-back by the Hawks, while Gray and Ferguson will be additions to the front half.
"It's good that we've been able to bring in some support to put around our young players," said Fiske, who has been with the Hawks since 2011.
"As much as we want to develop them, we don't want to throw them all to the wolves at once, we want to be able to support them with some good senior players around them who can show how we want to play Huntly footy.
"We think it will be an exciting year for us next season, but it's also a bit of the unknown without having the likes of the Semmels and (Chris) Gleesons, who have been a big part of our club for the best part of 10 years."
As expected, the Hawks were an improved side this year.
Following a wooden spoon in 2019 when they won just one game the Hawks had a 5-8 record from their 13 matches this year and finished sixth on the ladder.
Meanwhile, following the Hawks' recent annual general meeting the club has a new president with Jason Bawden taking over from Sam Walker.
Walker had spent the previous seven seasons in the role.
