CAPTAIN Linton Jacobs and Cameron Taylor set a new Strathdale-Maristians’ first XI opening partnership record in their Bendigo Bank Bendigo District Cricket Association match against Huntly-North Bendigo on Saturday.Jacobs and Taylor shared in an opening stand of 197 as the Suns basted 8-316 against the Power at Bell Oval. However, both fell agonisingly short of centuries, with Jacobs dismissed for 98 and Taylor for 94.The day’s play also featured a hat-trick by Huntly-North Bendigo all-rounder Sam Johnston. The fourth-placed Huntly-North Bendigo entered the first day of the final round sitting one game, plus 0.18 per cent, ahead of Strathfieldsaye, which is in fifth position. Following Saturday, the percentage gap has closed slightly to 0.16 after Bendigo scored 7-239 against the Jets. However, the Power’s percentage looked like it could take a major hit as they took almost four hours to claim their first wicket.Jacobs and Taylor’s partnership surpassed the previous record opening stand at the Suns of 175, set by Hayden Polglase and Andrew Price against Huntly-North Bendigo in round nine of the 2003-04 season, also at Bell Oval. The Power didn’t get their first breakthrough until 4.57pm in the 61st over when Jacobs was caught by wicket-keeper Brodie McRae off Josh Collinson two runs shy of what would have been his fourth career century.Jacobs’ 98 came off 194 balls and was laced with 17 boundaries. After being padded up for 217 minutes, No.3 Andrew Chalkley’s stay at the crease was only a short one as he was dismissed for one to be the second wicket to fall.Taylor’s innings lasted into the 67th over before he was the third wicket with the score on 206.Taylor faced 195 balls and hit eight fours before he was superbly caught at point by Brannon Stanford off Collinson (3-29), who took the first three wickets to fall. With his 94, it lifted Taylor’s tally of runs for the season to 606, and he now looks to have the title as the BDCA’s leading run-scorer for 2011-12 locked up.Dom Taylor (36 off 33) and No.10 Braden Hocking (27 n.o. off 18) later chipped in with handy innings’.Late in the day Johnston’s magnificent season for the Power continued when he claimed a hat-trick in the shadows of stumps.During his 22nd over Johnston dismissed Ben Smith (17, caught at mid-wicket by Matt Rule), Ryan Haythorpe (0, bowled) and Jacob DeAraugo (0, bowled) in consecutive deliveries.Having at one stage had figures of 0-70 off 20 overs, Johnston finished with 4-83 off 24 overs, and with 34 now looks destined to end the season as the competition’s leading wicket-taker.
