BENDIGO trainer Graham Donaldson will set his sights on trying to win a second Donald Cup next month with six-year-old gelding Buchan Hoaks.
Buchan Hoaks notched its fifth career win from 38 starts and tipped its earnings over $100,000 with its victory in Saturday's Race Services 0-58 Handicap (1600m) at the Bendigo Jockey Club.
Ridden by Zac Spain, Buchan Hoaks ($8.80) won by 3.5 lengths from Socialite Miss in its third start back from a three-week freshen up.
Buchan Hoaks has now finished in the placings in six of its past seven starts (two wins, one second and three thirds) dating back to July 11.
Donaldson will be hoping that solid form can continue with an eye now to the Donald Cup on Sunday, November 14.
"It was a really pleasing result and looking at the calendar, we might try to win the Donald Cup with him now. He has been going really well for us," Donaldson said.
Donaldson won the Donald Cup previously in 2005 with Sanireka.
"It's always nice to go back to the club and see your horse's name on the honour board," Donaldson said.
Buchan Hoaks was one of two Bendigo-trained winners at the BJC on Saturday, with Red Cracker also saluting for Bob Donat in her first start since July.
Ridden by Thomas Stockdale, Red Cracker ($8.60) won the Vantage Fuels 0-58 Handicap (2400m) - almost a year to the day since the six-year-old mare's previous win.
"She didn't do much in her jump-out the other day, but that was irrelevant... she ran home really well today," Donat said.
Saturday's BJC winners:
Race 1 - Nothing Silly.
Race 2 - Frost Yourself.
Race 3 - Oenology.
Race 4 - Ever Loved a Woman.
Race 5 - Red Cracker.
Race 6 - Kootara.
Race 7 - Latin Beat.
Race 8 - Buchan Hoaks.
The BJC's next meeting will be Bendigo Cup day on Wednesday, October 27, which will again be without a crowd for the second year in a row.
Meanwhile, Saturday's Avoca Cup was won by the Lindsey Smith-trained Morton's Fork ($5.70) by one length from Barry the Baptist.
