Scott Worthy, 41, appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court last month where he pleaded guilty to 22 charges including obtaining property by deception.

The court heard between January 7 and January 8 this year, the victim lost their wallet which contained a credit card.

Worthy came into possession of the card and went to several stores around Bendigo to buy alcohol, cigarettes, and shoes. He spent close to $300 using the stolen credit card.

The court heard he also withdrew $1065 from the card on January 14.

Worthy also stole a clothes dryer from a rental property and was found with a knife, cannabis, and methamphetamine in 2019.

The 41-year-old also pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered, unroadworthy vehicle with stolen number plates in October last year.

Defence lawyer Christine Callaghan told the court drug abuse was an issue for Worthy and his offending was related to his addiction.

Ms Callaghan said Worthy used the cash he withdrew from the stolen credit card to fund his drug habit.

The defence lawyer said Worthy had detoxed from drugs while in custody and he wanted to continue his drug rehabilitation.

Ms Callaghan said Worthy had stable accommodation in Wonthaggi in the state's south-east so he could be afforded the opportunity at a community corrections order.

Magistrate Megan Aumair said she would convict and sentence Worthy to a 12-month community corrections order.

He was also ordered to complete 75 hours of unpaid community work, as well as drug abuse treatment.

If Worthy did not plead guilty, he would have been given a two-year community corrections order with 200 hours of unpaid community work.
