The 30-year-old woman appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to four charges including recklessly causing injury and making threats to kill.

The court heard on January 21 this year, the woman was at her Long Gully home with her 10-year-old son and five-year-old daughter.

She had been drinking alcohol throughout the day and was heavily intoxicated when her son asked about an upcoming court hearing relating to custody matters.

The woman was agitated during the conversation and only became more aggressive when the boy said he wanted to live with his father.

The court heard the 10-year-old went to his bedroom where his five-year-old sister was also staying.

The woman grabbed a wooden bed rail, which was about two metres long, and came up to the boy.

She began attacking him with the wooden plank, hitting him all over his body.

The boy raised his arms to protect himself but she continued to strike him in the arm and body.

The court heard she told the boy she would kill him and his sister, before biting him on his left forearm.

The five-year-old girl was also struck to the lower back during the attack.

The boy managed to break free from his mother and ran next door to get help from a neighbour. The neighbour called the police and officers arrived a short time later.

The woman was arrested but was too intoxicated to be interviewed straight away.

Paramedics took the two children to hospital. The young boy had injuries including a fractured elbow and cuts and bruising to his skull and body.

The girl also had bruising to her lower back.

During her eventual record of interview, the woman admitted to police that she had assaulted her children with a plank of wood.

The woman said she "just wanted them taken away" from her and she had "lost it a little bit".

Victim impact statements from the two children were read to the court on Wednesday.

The 10-year-old boy said he felt angry and sad after the attack and had experienced nightmares. The boy said he was scared of his mother and he did not want to see or talk to her.

The young girl also said she had night terrors and was scared of her "evil" mother.

Defence lawyer Karin Temperley told the court the woman knew the incident was terrifying for her children.

Ms Temperley said the woman deeply regretted her actions, which occurred during a period of crisis. The defence lawyer said the woman was administered to hospital not long after the January attack.

Ms Temperley said the woman had not been in contact with her children since the offending and had surrendered custody of them.

The defence lawyer said the woman had a "toxic" upbringing and experienced family violence so she resorted to alcohol as a way to self-medicate.

Ms Temperley said the woman had been attending treatment for alcohol abuse and was seeing a psychologist for her mental health.

The woman has no prior criminal history and has not served any time in custody.

Magistrate Trieu Huynh said he would have the woman assessed for a community corrections order but was still considering a jail term as the offending was very serious.

The case was adjourned to next month. The woman's bail was extended to her next court hearing.
