The Kym Hann-trained four-year-old put the writing on a wall for a good preparation ahead, resuming from an 18-week spell to record an eye-catching 1200m win in a benchmark 58.
Superbly ridden by Logan McNeil, who finished the meeting with a double, King Dick demonstrated newfound maturity, trailing the leaders into the race before charging down the middle of the track to score a strong win over Rock My Frock and Who Told Ya.
It was the Redente/Amen's Sea gelding's second career win from seven starts.
King Dick had previously broken his maiden on a soft six at Kyneton in May, but went a further three starts on mainly soft ground last preparation without a follow-up.
Hann, however, remained undeterred and was quietly confident of a first-up victory on Friday on the strength of a trial win at Tatura earlier in the month.
"He did run some good races in other races after that (win), but he had a bit of bad luck in a few of them, (being) caught wide and that," he said.
"So you look into them and it reads not too bad for a race like this (at Echuca).
"He's matured now ... he was still very immature last time. I think we will find out this prep what he does really like and we'll go from there."
Hann, who notched his second win of the season from a small number of starters, could not have been more impressed with the strength of the win and foreshadowed his plan to step King Dick up in distance.
"We've got in mind that we want to get him out to 1400m and a mile. We've always had that in mind," he said.
"Now that he's finally starting to mature, I mean, he hasn't ticked off as just a wet track horse. He was pretty dominant.
"I think when he gets to the 1400m we'll see even more improvement out of the horse.
"He's got a bit of a cult following too, so it's great to see him do that."
The win was just the momentum boost Hann craved heading towards this coming Wednesday's Bendigo Cup meeting.
The young trainer has Royal Tyke and the unraced three-year-old filly Extreme Emotion among the nominations.
McNeil, who scored the first leg of his Echuca double aboard the Patrick Payne-trained Sixbysixtythree, said the race could not have unfolded more perfectly for King Dick.
"We always knew he had plenty of speed at the start and when the others wanted to go a little bit hard up in front I was pretty happy to slot in behind them and he relaxed really nice," he said.
"Which is good for him as he has a lot to learn, but he put them away nicely.
"He's on the up."
