AN ULTRA-consistent season in which he featured in his side's best players in nine of the 10 games he played has earned Eaglehawk midfielder Billy Evans the No.1 position in this year's Addy BFNL player rankings.
Former Brisbane Lion Evans was one of the competition's marquee recruits, and although lockdown restrictions for Melbourne-based players prevented him from playing two games, the 24-year-old didn't disappoint.
Evans topped the 2021 rankings with 92.0 points, with Gisborne on-baller Brad Bernacki (80.0), Sandhurst defender and best and fairest Lachlan Ross (80.0), South Bendigo ball magnet and best and fairest Cooper Leon (79.5) and Gisborne full-forward Pat McKenna (77.0) rounding out the top five.
The ranking points aim to reflect both performing consistently and playing key roles in helping teams to win games and are based off the weekly best players named by clubs after each game.
How the points work:
Winning team - 1st best (16.0 points); 2nd best (13.5); 3rd best (11.0); 4th best (8.5); 5th best (6.0); 6th best (3.5).
Losing team - 1st best (7.0); 2nd best (6.0); 3rd best (5.0); 4th best (4.0); 5th best (3.0); 6th best (2.0).
Drawn game (both teams) - 1st best (10.0); 2nd best (8.5); 3rd best (7.0); 4th best (5.5); 5th best (4.0); 6th best (2.5).
"I really enjoyed the year at Eaglehawk. I found the club really good and accommodating for myself and a few other boys travelling back from Melbourne," Evans said at the weekend.
"The season didn't go the way we wanted it to (the Hawks finished sixth), but I think that was because we had a lot of new guys this year who were learning how to play footy together.
"The interrupted season didn't help us either, but I think we'll be better for it next year."
Of the nine games where Evans was named among the Hawks' best players, seven times he was rated among their top three players.
"I was able to be reasonably consistent throughout the year, which is always good," said Evans, who played seven AFL games with Brisbane across 2015-16.
Evans, who will continue with the Hawks next season, was picked in the centre in the Addy's BFNL Team of the Year.
Gisborne, Golden Square and Sandhurst each had the most players in the top 50 list with eight apiece, followed by big improvers South Bendigo with six, while top team Strathfieldsaye had five.
