Today marks the annual headspace Day, a national day of support for the mental health and wellbeing of all young Australians.
More news:
Staff at headspace Bendigo spent today providing mental health and wellbeing support packs to local secondary schools.
The packs are aimed at promoting the seven tips for a healthy headspace and encouraging young people to slow down and enjoy the moment.
The call to action follows the release of new headspace research that shows more than half of young Australians still deal with personal problems on their own, rather than speaking to someone.
The headspace National Youth Mental Health Survey also found three in five young people feel there is still stigma around seeking help for a mental illness.
In Victoria, 59 per cent of young people prefer to deal with their personal problems on their own, while 62 per cent agree there is stigma around seeking help for a mental illness in Australia.
Headspace chief executive Jason Trethowan said the events of the past 18 months have put added stress on the mental health and wellbeing of many young people.
"We know young people have been disproportionately affected by this pandemic with major changes to their study, home and social lives," he said.
"That's why we are so concerned that many young Australians continue dealing with their problems on their own instead of reaching out for help.
"We want young people to know there is always someone you can talk to - be it a trusted adult in your life, a friend, a family member or a service like headspace.
"You don't need to go it alone."
Mr Trethowan said it was never been more important for young people to implement healthy habits that support mental health.
headspace Bendigo Centre Manager Lindsay Rose said mental health was a community issue.
''The figures are really concerning to us and highlight the continued need to have a community focus on mental health issues and encourage help seeking behaviors by our young people," he said.
"If young people are seeking support for their mental health, we would encourage them to make contact with our centre or our online services available at headspace.
Staff are also hoping to visit five regional schools on the day to hold mental health and wellbeing workshops over lunch with students
