Desmond Robinson, 39, appeared in the County Court on Tuesday where he was sentenced to 10 months in prison and a 12-month community corrections order.

He pleaded guilty in August to charges of burglary, theft of a firearm, theft, and recklessly causing injury.

The court heard on October 26, 2019, Robinson broke into an unoccupied property at Koroop in the state's north.

Robinson removed the padlocks from a homemade gun safe, before grabbing a shotgun and a rifle.

He then entered a farm shed on the property, which contained a bench saw on a trailer and a ride-on lawn mower.

The 39-year-old hooked the trailer with the bench saw onto his vehicle, loaded the mower onto the trailer, and then drove home.

The thefts were later discovered and reported to the police.

The court heard Robinson sold the stolen ride-on mower and bench saw to an associate for a total of $700.

Robinson also pleaded guilty to punching a woman in the arm on November 4.

The 39-year-old was arrested on November 7 when police raided his home. The two stolen firearms have not been recovered.

Judge Justin Hannebery said the theft of the firearms was "objectively serious" and would have taken a degree of pre-planning.

The judge said it was an aggravating feature that the firearms were not found.

"Two weapons that were otherwise legally owned... are now unaccounted for," Judge Hannebery said.

The judge noted Robinson had a traumatic upbringing that was marred by abuse and drug addiction.

Judge Hannebery said he accepted Robinson had entered a plea at an early stage, although the 39-year-old made the "unwise" decision to not appear in court for his original plea date last year.

The judge said the subsequent period on remand had been productive for Robinson, as he had made efforts towards treatment for his drug addiction and mental health issues.

Judge Hannebery said a community corrections order would help Robinson with his "reasonable" rehabilitation prospects.

Robinson was convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail, with 208 days of pre-sentence detention reckoned as already served.

He was also ordered to complete a 12-month community corrections order with 100 hours of unpaid community work.

If Robinson did not plead guilty, he would have been jailed for 21 months with a non-parole period of 15 months.
