Due to COVID-19 the Diamonds have been starved of international competition since 2019, only managing one losing series against New Zealand earlier this year.

They were due to play a second Constellation Cup series in October but that was cancelled, as was their three-Test home series against England.

Newly-appointed Australian captain Liz Watson said the players were currently in camp in Queensland, trying to make the most of their time together.

"We have decided to have some matches, just against each other, because this is such an important time for us," Watson said at a Birmingham Games promotion on Friday.

"We're all from different states so actually getting to one state is a massive challenge in itself so we're going to use this as a selection camp as well.

"We're then hoping to get over to England in January and play a quad series against the Ferns (New Zealand), South Africa and England which will be awesome for us.

"It's a really important phase, even though we aren't playing right now, we have to use this as selection for that January series and then obviously from that, picking the team that's going to the Games."

The Diamonds suffered a shock loss to England in the final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

They also surrendered the 2019 World Cup trophy to New Zealand in Liverpool, UK.

Watson, who has been sidelined for the entire year following foot surgery, said they were determined to re-start their silverware collection.

"The Commonwealth Games is our pinnacle event in netball, along with the World Cup, so it's so important for us," the star Melbourne Vixens midcourter said.

"That was such a heart-wrenching close loss on the Gold Coast so absolutely, we want that medal - we don't hold any medals or trophies at the moment so we're working for that."
