Following a meeting with traditional owners to discuss the protection of emus and their chicks, council has worked with Southern Fauna and Ecology to establish the plan which outlines potential pathways forward for a group of eight emus currently residing within a fenced enclosure on the mount.
In July, a traditional owner of the area, Gary Murray said First Nations, residents were concerned for the emus and their chicks.
"Emus are sacred for First Nations people, including the Wamba Wamba, Barapa Barapa and Wergaia, who are the traditional owners of the area," he said.
"Traditional owners are demanding the emus, as well as other animals and plants, be protected from further harm, including via a proper management plan."
The Buloke Shire's plan includes a brief site visit, data and literature searches, and community consultation.
Council said the objective is to provide council with options for the long-term sustainability, welfare and wellbeing of the emus currently residing on the mount.
"Council has engaged an appropriately qualified and experienced consultant to develop a wildlife management plan to understand the complexities and opportunities in managing the emu population on Mt Wycheproof," a Buloke Shire spokesperson said.
"The plan will look at actions to manage wildlife at Mt Wycheproof that are effective, evidence-based and relevant, considerate of animal welfare and cultural heritage, community and other biodiversity values."
