"I could not understand that my sliding glass door at the back of my home was rattling," he said.
"I went outside to see if there was a strong wind, but it was dead calm."
Mr MacDonald said it felt like the Kangaroo Flat area rattled for at least five seconds.
Maree Stanley was at her home in Maiden Gully when the earthquake struck.
"I was sitting in the chair watching TV waiting to go to Pilates when the whole house shook," she said.
"I thought 'what on earth is going on?'. The chair I was sitting in started shaking.
More news:
"I was waiting for the walls to start cracking but they didn't so well done builders."
Mrs Stanley said the shaking probably lasted a few seconds but it felt like several minutes.
"The furniture was moving - it was really scary," she said.
"It was really weird sitting in your house and having it move around you.
"I just stayed in my chair because I thought it might get worse. I didn't want to get up just in case. I thought I'd wait to see how it goes."
Mrs Stanley's husband Neil was in the shower at the time of the earthquake but felt nothing. However, their neighbours also felt the earth move.
"There's a housing development down the end of the street and I thought oh no, they've hit a gas pipe or something but it just kept going," Mrs Stanley said.
"I've lived in Melbourne and the outer suburbs and felt earth tremors before but nothing like this."
"Pictures all stayed in place so we're pretty lucky," she said.
Mrs Stanley said a quick check of house had not revealed any major structural damage but would make a through investigation after her Pilates workout.
"I need some calming down," she said on her way to the Pilates class.
"I was just getting out of bed because I do an afternoon shift and it felt something had grabbed the top of the house and given it a shake," Mr Jerman said.
"We were rocking and rolling.
"It was like the house was going over a wave."
"It lasted about 20 seconds and there were a couple of things rattling and the lights were shaking. It was entertaining."
Rather than feeling scared, Mr Jerman's immediate reaction was "what the hell was that?" before the realisation it couldn't be anything else except for an earthquake.
A quick walk through the house revealed some little cracks in a couple of walls but nothing too serious.
"There was just me and my two adult children in the house and they ran in accusing me of trying to wake them up," Mr Jerman said.
A former Bendigo resident working in a government call centre in Melbourne watched the quake from his CBD high rise office.
"It was intense being 13 floors up in the CBD and watching the buildings shake below," he said.
"I thought we were going to have a few of the wall mounted screens fall off. Luckily, no damage though."
