The waters, excluding the areas prohibited to vessels, are now subject to a 5-knot speed restriction when the water level of the lake is at 100.0m AHD or less.
GMW Water Delivery Services general manager Warren Blyth said the speed limit would be enforced to stop high-speed boating and protect recreational boat operators and passengers from potential injury or damage to boats.
"With limited inflows, Greens Lake levels have remained static throughout winter and are creating inadequate depths and underwater hazards for boating," he said.
Mr Blyth said the safety rule applied to the whole lake, with the exception of the prohibited vessel zone near the pump house at the northern end of the lake.
"The lake is sitting at 20.53 per cent capacity - which is inadequate to meet the 2m constant depth to enable safe high speed boating," he said.
Greens Lake remains open to camping and passive recreation, including angling and low-speed boating such as canoeing and kayaking, and toilets and shower facilities are available.
Visitors to the lake are also required to take their rubbish with them as part of GMW's 'carry-in, carry-out' policy, aimed at stopping illegal dumping of rubbish and keeping the lake area safe and clean.
