Building a facility like this at a time when Australians are increasingly avoiding products for which animals were harmed or killed is not a good investment
- PETA's Mimi Bekheci
"Australia's native animals have already been through so much in the past few years, and the last thing they need is a facility that encourages and perpetuates hunting and killing them."
The proposal says the facility - to be established at a former abattoir - would primarily process about 1000 kangaroo carcasses each week before distributing the product to another site to be processed and packaged into pet food. No live animals will attend the site.
A Loddon Shire spokesperson confirmed council has received the planning application for the Tarnagulla Road site.
"The application is in the process of being assessed by council officers," the spokesperson said. "Following the completion of the assessment process, the application will proceed to a future meeting of council for its consideration."
The petition sites concerns that the facility would encourage the growth of the kangaroo-hunting industry and potentially drive the Australian animal to extinction.
PETA is also against the national Code of Practice for kangaroo hunters that requires hunters to destroy joeys and that kangaroos are killed with a lethal shot to the head.
