HUNTLY-North Bendigo caused the upset of the 12th round in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo District Cricket Association on Saturday with a stunning win over Bendigo United at Harry Trott Oval. Defending their score of 146 – which was made after one stage being 7-38 last week – the Power bowled the Redbacks out for 133 to win by 13 runs. The star for the Power was Sam Johnston, who produced the best all-round game of the season. After making 54 not out last week, Johnston backed that up on Saturday with the ball by taking 6-60 off 27 overs. The superb victory has moved Huntly-North Bendigo into fourth position on the ladder at the expense of White Hills with two rounds remaining, while the loss cost the Redbacks top spot, with that now occupied by Strathdale-Maristians.The Redbacks resumed on Saturday at 1-41, but were in immediate trouble when they lost three wickets in the first three overs. With just six more runs added to the overnight score the Redbacks lost Wayne Fidler (9), Harry Donegan (0) and Heath Behrens (23) to crash to 4-47.Power spinner Nick Roebuck (2-15 off 13 overs) claimed the wickets of Fidler and Donegan, while Johnston bowled Behrens. And from there it only got worse for Bendigo United as the Redbacks crashed to 7-83, with veteran Nick Crawford joining Donegan in making a golden duck. However, Zac Mona and Byron Perrin (16) gave the Redbacks a chance of getting back into the game with a 41-run partnership for the eighth wicket. But when Mona, who top-scored with 24 off 58, was caught by keeper Brannon Stanford off Todd Jacobs (1-14) with the score on 124, the Redbacks then lost their last three wickets for nine runs to be bowled out for 133 and lose to the Power for the second time this season.Johnston’s haul was the first time a Huntly-North Bendigo player has taken six wickets in an innings since the club was formed in 2001-02.As well as the wickets of Fidler and Behrens, Johnston also dismissed Mark Di Fede (4), Curtis Tuohey (9), Leigh McDermott (19) and Crawford (0).From what the Redbacks had hoped would be a solid day of batting practice after passing the total ended with the side spending 48 overs in the field as the Power made 5-148 in their second innings.● Golden Square all but ended Eaglehawk’s finals hopes with a 40-run win at Canterbury Park.Chasing 9-263, the Hawks were bowled out for 223 as they lost their fourth game in a row.The Hawks were well placed in their chase in the 35th over when they were 1-93.However, a collapse in which they lost 6-41 to fall to 7-134 in the 51st over ended their chances.Losing wickets in quick succession has plagued the Hawks since the mid-season break and it again proved costly. However, the Hawks didn’t go down without a fight as the last three wickets combined to add 89 runs, 40 of which were put on by the last pair in Richard Tibbett (27 n.o.) and Sam Fitt (17).Opener Shane Herdman (50 off 107, eight fours) was the only player to make more than 30.Opening bowler James Pietromonaco claimed 5-74 off 23 overs for Golden Square, with his wickets Jason Abbott (23), Cameron McGlashan (19), the out-of-sorts Matt Fitt (2), Andrew Smith (22) and Matt White (27).Golden Square is now just percentage away from the second-placed Bendigo United.
