HUNTLY trotter Billy The Brat is the 125-1 outsider of the field for tonight’s $250,000 Inter-Dominion Trotters Final, but that matters little to his veteran trainer Bill White.White, 77, has spent 50 years trying to have a trotter good enough to qualify for the Inter-Dominion final. His consistent mare Miss Tiny Tot came close, running second in the Inter-Dominion consolation final in 2004.With this year marking the final running of the Inter-Dominion series for trotters, White thought his hopes were dashed. But injury-prone trotter Billy The Brat has proved he can match it with Australasia’s best and earned a berth in tonight’s final at Melton.“It feels rather good,’’ White said of finally having a runner in the most prestigious trotters event in Australasia.“We’ll need a lot of luck, but we’re in it... that’s the main thing.“Considering what this horse has been through he’s done well just to make it.”Billy The Brat is aptly named. He’s caused all sorts of trouble.White nearly gave up on the horse when he was a two-year-old.Billy The Brat had to be gelded twice because one testicle was missed at the first attempt.“Since then he’s broken down three times,’’ White said.“He’s done a tendon, had bone chips in his knee and has two or three screws in his pastern.“If you saw him on the training track you wouldn’t give two bob for him. He just ambles around. “But when he gets on the racetrack he knows what he’s doing.”Billy The Brat hasn’t finished further back than fifth in his past five starts. His second row draw makes life tough tonight, but he will be suited by a good tempo up front.“He’s got better as this series has gone on,’’ White said of Billy The Brat’s fifth and fourth placings in the Inter-Dominion heats.“He hasn’t got much speed early, so the back row draw isn’t too much of a worry. He’ll be back in the field, but he’ll finish off the race strongly.“The harder they go up front the better he’ll like it.“We’re hoping for the best.”Billy The Brat’s regular diver is Bill’s son Ian, who bred and owns the trotter with his wife Sue.“It’s pretty special for us because we bred him and he’s up against some regally bred trotters,’’ Sue said.“He’s been a wonderful horse for us. Hopefully, he gets through it in one piece.”Meanwhile, Goornong driver Nigel Milne has the opportunity to win the biggest race of his career when he partners Kiwi trotter Stylish Moncarh in tonight’s final.
