In the past two months several rounds have been missed and some teams haven't played a game since early July.
NBL1 general manager Dean Anglin expressed his disappointment in having to announce the season would be no more.
"Despite working tirelessly with our clubs to try and find a way to complete the season in a safe manner, the extension of restrictions in Victoria and travel restrictions imposed on our Tasmanian clubs, the Mount Gambier Pioneers and Albury-Wodonga Bandits has forced us to make the difficult decision to cancel the season," he said.
"With a combined 148 men's and women's games still to be played, there will be no champion and no individual awards for the 2021 NBL1 South season.
"We thank all of the NBL1 South clubs, Basketball Victoria and our partners for their cooperation and patience during the decision-making process.
"Planning for the 2022 NBL1 South season is already underway, and we can't wait for the conference to return bigger and better next year."
In other news, Bendigo Braves' Abbey Wehrung has been announced as a reserve player for Australia's FIBA Women's Asia Cup squad.
The squad will be coached by Paul Gorris and will have current Women's Centre of Excellence head coach Kristen Veal as assistant for the tournament scheduled to be held in Amman, Jordan in late September.
Australia has drawn China, Chinese Taipei and the Philippines in Group B.
The team will kick off the tournament with a clash against Chinese Taipei on September 27 followed by a match with the Philippines the next day.
On September 27 Australia will have an Olympic rematch against China.
"We have some young bigs and the experience they will gain from this will help the Opals in the future in preparation and readiness for the World Cup,' Gorris said.
"I am confident we have the balance of speed, defense and grit for us to be competitive next month."
