Selwood's 333rd game for the Cats breaks his premiership team-mate Corey Enright's club record of 332 games.
A mighty achievement considering the way he puts his body on the line each week.
"It's pretty special,'' Selwood said of the games record.
"I've been here for a long time, but it also says I've been in good health for a long period of that time.
"I've played with some hell of a players that have dragged me through and some really fun times over the journey.
"(I'm) really grateful that I've been able to do it here all at the one club."
Selwood said the games record was not something he'd focused on and he doesn't expect to hold the record for long.
"It's one that creeps up on you,'' Selwood said.
"When Corey Enright was finishing up he pulled me aside a couple of days after the season...and he told me he was going to finish up.
"I told him to take a bit more time because I thought he still had some run in the legs and I wanted him to keep playing on.
"It's one of those things that's come up and I'm sure someone else will break it. Big Hawk (Tom Hawkins) is going so well at the moment.
"It won't be a record that lasts for too long."
Selwood said he couldn't have played so many games for the Cats without the support of team-mates and staff members.
"I've loved coming in and working, not only come a weekend, but throughout the week with a lot of good people,'' he said.
"I should send a lot of thank-you's to those people I've worked around.
"Not only the physios and doctors, but the strength and conditioning (staff) and even staff that have been around the Geelong footy club that have made it a really good journey."
On Friday night the Cats' season is on the line when they face the GWS Giants at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Geelong produced one of its worst performances of the season in last week's qualifying loss to Port Adelaide.
"We need to respond,'' Selwood said.
"We didn't look back too much on what it is. We reviewed the game for what it was. We played poorly and we didn't have a lot of winners on the night.
"We've set ourselves up for a second chance, so it's time to use that up. Best case scenario you don't have to use it up, but we're fortunate we gave ourselves that chance."
Selwood said the Cats' initial response to the loss to Port Adelaide was anger.
"We're a pretty competitive bunch, so for a lot of us that played poor on the night, and there were a number of us, we were a bit angry with how we performed,'' Selwood said.
"That's in that (first) 24 hours (after the game) and then we got on with it. We had a look at the GWS-Sydney game and found out who we played."
Selwood's journey already includes three premierships, the last of which came 10 years ago in 2011.
A fourth flag - his first as captain - would be Selwood's crowning glory, but he's not looking past Friday's game with the Giants.
The semi-final will be his 36th finals appearance - second on the AFL/VFL's all-time list, with Hawthorn great Michael Tuck the only player ahead of him with 39.
"I know that the journey (2021 premiership) is still far away from where we sit today,'' Selwood said.
"It's one that I'll look at if we get a chance in a few weeks' time."
As a 17-year-old with the Bendigo Pioneers, Selwood was told by a doctor that his football career would be short because of a knee injury.
Now aged 33, he's a Geelong champion and a future AFL Hall of Fame inductee.
"I feel pretty lucky,'' Selwood said.
"It was a bit of a dodgy start, but it's been a ride I'd love to do all over again and experience all the highs that I have.
"It's one where I'll stay in the moment and, hopefully, I have a few more highs left."
