FORMER headmaster of Girton Grammar Clayton Jones will today be honoured with an Order of Australia Medal for his role in rebuilding Girton school and for his community involvement.Mr Jones said the medal was an honour he never expected.“I always read the list of Order of Australia recipients and see people from the community who’ve been honoured,” he said. “Never in my life did I think I’d be beside those names. “I must say this is the most thrilling award, prize or other I’ve ever received.”After moving to Bendigo in 1992, Mr Jones helped re-form Girton Grammar, after the school closed in 1992.“There was an enormous amount of work to do, but we had a fantastic team of people, board members, students and staff, working seven days a week.“It was a marvellous team spirit, and there still is at the school.“The award is very much about the senior staff that helped achieve that rebuilding mission.”Mr Jones moved from Ireland to Australia in 1972 and said he “fell into teaching”.He moved to play cricket but ended up teaching, before becoming headmaster of Newington College in Sydney.Since moving to Bendigo, Mr Jones has won a range of teaching awards, as well as being involved in Rotary and foundations such as White Ribbon.
