AN OLD-FASHIONED defender who is rarely beaten is how Mitiamo coach Andy Grant describes Superoos' backman Max Simpson.
Simpson has been a key pillar of statistically the Loddon Valley league's best defence according to Addy records dating back to 1980 that has conceded an average of just 40 points per game this year.
He's also the player who has finished No.1 in the Addy's LVFNL player rankings for 2021 with 91.5 points.
How the points work:
Winning team - 1st best (16.0 points); 2nd best (13.5); 3rd best (11.0); 4th best (8.5); 5th best (6.0); 6th best (3.5).
Losing team - 1st best (7.0); 2nd best (6.0); 3rd best (5.0); 4th best (4.0); 5th best (3.0); 6th best (2.0).
Drawn game (both teams) - 1st best (10.0); 2nd best (8.5); 3rd best (7.0); 4th best (5.5); 5th best (4.0); 6th best (2.5).
In short, the rankings aim to reflect performing consistently and playing key roles in helping teams to win games.
Simpson - a 2019 premiership player - featured in the undefeated Superoos' best players in nine of their 12 games, including four where he was rated one of their top three performers and is one of nine Mitiamo players in the top 50.
"Max gets the job on the opposition's most dynamic forward every week and is rarely beaten... put it this way, he wouldn't have had many goals kicked on him this year," Grant said this week.
"He's an old-fashioned, straight-at-the-ball type of player. He doesn't deviate or care about contact and has really good closing speed on his opponent.
"He doesn't look like a footballer, he looks more like a surfer from Anglesea where he is from, but he's a super player with a great defensive awareness.
"Our back six has been super all year and Max is a big part of that in taking the opposition's big key forward and he really thrives on the challenge."
