However, upon reflection on the challenging lockdown-marred season, Kerang coach Jon Roberts couldn't be happier with how the team wrapped up the year.
The 2021 competition marked the club's first playing-year in the league and Roberts has seen a big improvement from where the squad was at the start of the season compared to its most recent game, a 57-point win over Kyneton (9.16-70 def 2.1-13).
"From where we were in the first half in comparison to the second, there were major improvements in how the girls approached each game," Roberts said.
"The way in which we were able to finish off the year with the results we secured, winning four of our last six games was a good way to wind it up."
Roberts said the biggest improvement during the course of the year was the team's ability to execute set plays.
"The team really refined the way they approached structures and where they needed to be on the field and most of all trusted each other across the ground," he said.
"There's always more room to refine tiny elements but the improvements certainly made us a lot better as a team."
The only major challenge for the Blues this year, which most clubs across the region experienced, was the unpredictability of lockdowns and restrictions.
Given Kerang's location, it was even tougher for the squad given that several of the players live in New South Wales.
"Towards the end of the season one of our best players in Hannah Stewart wasn't able to play the last few games due to restrictions," Roberts said.
"We also have a few players from Barham that missed a few of the last games too."
Upon reflection Roberts, who also coaches the Kerang reserves, was pleased with his efforts in the top job this season.
"It was a big challenge at the start of the season as a lot of the girls needed to improve the basic structures required for a strong game of footy," he said.
"After hard work with the girls we were able to develop into a team that understands and has great knowledge on how a game is played.
"It was even better to have those wins over Kangaroo Flat and Strathfieldsaye to show the girls they can mix with the stronger teams."
