Prime Minister Scott Morrison said cabinet had agreed to expand the national roll-out to all people aged between 16 and 39 from August 30.
"We agreed today, and the cabinet met today, to affirm that we will be moving to opening up 16 to 39 year olds for the balance of the program," Mr Morrison said.
But Mr Morrison urged people in that age range not to attempt to book their vaccinations just yet.
"We will advise when bookings can be made. It isn't today," he said.
Earlier, 2.25pm: More vaccines are on the way to Bendigo as the Mollison Street Mass Vaccination Centre aims to ramp up its daily administration tally.
The state-run vaccination centre is currently administering 700 jabs a day, or around 5000 per week. Bendigo Health chair Bob Cameron said the centre was aiming for 7000 vaccinations per week.
"We want people to register and come and get their jab," Mr Cameron said. "We are fortunate to have the extra vaccine supply.
"The issue we have here in Bendigo is when we look to our north, we're seeing cases over the river, And when we turn to our south we see the issues challenging Melbourne.
"It feels like it's getting closer and the best thing that we can do as a community is come and get vaccinated."
Premier Daniel Andrews urged Victorians to book in for their vaccine appointments during his Thursday press conference and said Bendigo Health had 2545 empty appointments.
"They aren't the only ones available, they are just a sample of well-known locations," he said.
"In aggregate over the next week, we have some 26,000 bookings that are free across the state. The split is 14,000 Pfizer, 12,000 AstraZeneca.
"There are appointments there, they are ready. The teams are ready to give you your jab. You just need to book and you can book with confidence."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Cameron said the empty appointments were looking ahead to the next week and hoped people would continue to register for the vaccine.
"Some people book ahead for their appointment but many get in within a couple of days," he said. "That means, next week there's vacancies but there are additional places as well."
The federal government's weekly Geographic Vaccination Rates report, released on Tuesday, revealed Warrnambool and the south-west region has moved in front of Bendigo in the Victorian leaderboard with 57.9 per cent of the population aged over 15 receiving their first dose.
Bendigo's population now sits in second place at 57.4 per cent of residents aged over 15 years receiving one dose of a vaccine, a rise of 3.4 per cent in a week, and 33 per cent receiving two jabs. Geelong leads the second dose tally with 33.9 per cent of its population fully vaccinated.
Mr Cameron said Bendigo Health was not aware of any case in the region that had been tested by its public health facilities.
