Cody Jones and Broden Minogue started work on their series, Bonk City Detectives, after lockdown left them with nothing else to do.

The pair plan to write, film and perform in six episodes and have started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project.

Jones, who is also a stand-up comedian, said he and Minogue had been writing sketches for a long time but decided to create a web series after being inspired by a British TV show that spoofs 1980s television dramas.

"Broden said we're going to watch this show called Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. It's hilarious, there's overacting, it's got an '80s theme and it's sort of like a spooky comedy," Jones said.

"We sat down and watched that and I was just dying with laughter. We thought we could make something like that because it's (deliberately) terrible. It doesn't need to be cinematic or A-grade Hollywood.

"The next day we were writing and it evolved into a pilot about 20 minutes long and now it's developed into a six-part web series that we want to go as far as it possibly can."

After writing and shooting the first episode, Jones and Minogue launched their Kickstarter with the aim of being able to increase their production value. It has a target of $6300 and has already reached more than $4000.

"We had some ambitious ideas and thought we might see what the public interest was like," Minogue said. "We wanted see what we can do on our own and what we might need to stretch for. A lot (the funds) will be reward fulfillment for pledges but also for costumes, lighting, editing and marketing.

"We have already seen a lot of good support from a lot of people and that's humbling.

"This is something we had to refine. It's our humour in there but we get to make it as best as we possibly can. The people who get it, really really get it. We want people know this is satire and parody and meant to be something funny and fun."

Bonk City Detectives adventures of two maverick detectives and aims to be a parody of '80s based detective dramas such as Starsky and Hutch, Magnum PI and MacGyver.

"We are trying to lean into that hacky acting and sometimes terrible camera work," Jones said. "We want it to look like it was made by us.

"We're aiming to get a cult, online following. I think that's key to these shows, is to go online. TV is harder to crack into but online anyone can get on there."

For Jones, the series has also provided a creative outlet while stand-up comedy gigs are unable to go ahead.

"The gigging has well and truly died off but this has taken the drivers seat," he said. "It is something you can do while locked down. We started Kickstarter during lockdown and it gives us something to do while there is nothing else to do.

"There will also be opportunities for people to be involved via Kickstarter but we are reaching out for people to be extras to involve the community (subject to COVID-restrictions)."

Minogue said they hope to have all six episodes completed by December if restrictions stay eased enough to continue filming.

"At the moment our delivery date is quite far away but hope to have this out by Christmas if we stop getting locked down," he said. "It has been nice to have support for two guys who are not necessarily involved in the filmmaking industry and doing things a different way.

"We are just two guys with cameras and a bunch of mates and we appreciate the support from anyone who has contributed tot he project."
