Census Executive Director and national spokesperson Andrew Henderson said Bendigo's participation by lighting up its Conservatory reflects how important census was for the local community.
Mr Henderson said census data provided comprehensive snapshot not only of the nation, but also of communities right around Australia.
"It gives us essential information about our economic, social and cultural makeup," he said.
"This information helps to plan and deliver crucial services, so everyone's participation is important.
"This year, census data will be more important than ever, as it will provide valuable insights into how the pandemic has changed life in Australia.
"For example, it will tell us who is moving and will provide a detailed picture of changes in work practices in metropolitan and regional Australia."
Mr Henderson said the data also provided evidence of fluctuations in population growth.
It's intended to provide a snapshot of the nation in time for future generations, but this year's census was certainly unlike others before it.
