The City of Greater Bendigo was celebrating a $300,0000 federal funding announcement on Wednesday which will be used to concrete over areas where emergency helicopters land, with enough space left over for private choppers and a dedicated space for fuel tankers.

The new federal funds were part of a $30 million regional splash under Round 2 of the Regional Airports Program.

However, council is seeking $4.3 million to upgrade the Bendigo Airport terminal to ensure it is able to keep up with its expected nine-fold increase in passengers.

Ms Chesters said now, more than ever, an upgraded terminal is needed as our region rebounds from lockdowns.

"While any funding for the Bendigo Airport is welcome, the Morrison government's announcement simply isn't good enough," she said.

"The construction of a helicopter stand and fuel truck area is important, but it is not the terminal upgrade that we so desperately need."

Figures last month released by council predict that over 240,000 people will be using the Bendigo Airport by 2030.

"$300 000 is a drop in the ocean of what is needed to allow the Bendigo Airport to grow," Ms Chesters said.

"People want to come to Bendigo. Upgrading the Bendigo Airport will allow more people, from more places to experience our region.

"I will continue to fight for the Bendigo Airport and ensure we get the funding that is needed to get this upgrade done."
