Starting on the back nine at the PGA Tour event hosted by TPC Twin Cities, Herbert carded a one-under with just one dropped shot for the day on the par-four 10th.
He was able to get the balance back under-par with birdies on the par-four 15th after sinking a 5.4m birdie putt, and another on the par-five 18th.
Herbert's card was unscathed on the front with birdies on the par-four first and par-five sixth, to finish the day at three-under 68 and is currently T17.
There are still several players out on the field for round one, but the best scores in so far are Rickie Fowler and Troy Merritt at seven-under.
He will return for round two at 9.50PM AEST Friday night alongside Kyle Stanley and Josh Teater.
