A COMMUNITY and Public Sector Union Victoria spokesman has said an acting supervisor had been attacked in one of the secure units of the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on July 19.
They said the assault was "unprovoked" and "violent", happening at one of the most tense times of day at the centre.
"This time of night, just before lockdown, is very volatile as these inmates are directed to head back to rooms to be secure," the spokesperson said.
"We are hoping to get Worksafe in to take a look at the CCTV footage and see if we can get a clearer picture of what happened at the time."
They said the centre is expecting other staff members to take time off after the attack.
"This is the second incident in Malmsbury in the last three weeks and in the past we have seen a number of absences in the days after these attacks," they said.
"Whether it's the staff member who has been the victim or other staff on at the time, it really is a confidence crusher to even see something like this happen."

A STAFF member at Malsmbury Youth Justice Centre has been taken to Bendigo Health after an assault.
Police and paramedics were called to the centre about 7.30pm on Monday after an inmate allegedly attacked the male staff member, 27.
Macedon Ranges Criminal investigators said it was unclear why the attack occurred.
Investigators said while the extent of the staff member's injuries were unknown, the man was punched and kicked in the face, was missing teeth and had obvious swelling and abrasions around his head and face.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a man was treated for upper body injuries, and taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Investigators said the inmate would be charged with intentionally causing serious injury.
This is the third assault at the centre this year, with the most recent being last month after a staff member taken to hospital after being assaulted.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said staff safety was "of the utmost importance".
"Victoria takes a zero-tolerance approach to violence and assaults in youth justice centres," they said.
"All incidents and allegations are referred to Victoria Police."
