THE Des Kelly Memorial Challenge Cup being up for grabs will provide some added incentive for country rivals Kyneton and Castlemaine across all their Bendigo Football-Netball League contests this Saturday.
The Tigers and Magpies will play at the Kyneton Showgrounds in round 13 of the BFNL season, with the Des Kelly Memorial Challenge Cup to be awarded based on the results of all football and netball games.
"It's a great local tradition that means so much more than the scores on the board," Kyneton president Hayden Evans said on Wednesday.
"Des Kelly was a great worker for the Kyneton FNC and supported this initiative as he had a real desire to see local teams do well.
"It's great to see both teams fielding sides; we are up against it and have been for some years, but I truly believe we are on the improve."
Castlemaine president Caleb Kuhle said the Magpies were determined to produce a strong showing in all seven games that will be contested between the two clubs on Saturday.
"It's a day the whole club can be involved in and that is what is really special. It isn't just about the senior footy results, but gives all football and netball teams something extra to play for," Kuhle said.
"There is a lot of meaning behind the cup, too, so it isn't just another game.
"It will be a great day and regardless of the results, we are in a bit of a similar position youth-wise, so it gives the two clubs a connection to each other, while maintaining a staunch rivalry.
"To be honest, we just want to see Kyneton and ourselves get better and be pillars of success in the league."
There are amended times for Saturday's football games: under-18s (10am); reserves (11.50am); seniors (1.40pm).
There are no changes to any of the starting netball times.
Meanwhile, Kyneton coach Paul Chapman is to face the BFNL tribunal tonight after being reported during last Saturday's loss to South Bendigo.
Chapman - in his first season at the Tigers, who sit seventh on the ladder - was reported for allegedly "using abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene language towards or in relation to an umpire".
