Herbert fired a five-under par 66 on Sunday to finish at -17 overall, one shot shy of securing a spot in the sudden-death playoff against Thomas Detry, Matthew Fitzpatrick and eventual winner Min Woo Lee (-18).
In the final round Herbert - while paired with world number one Jon Rahm - shot a two-under front nine which included three birdies and one bogey, followed by a three-under back nine with no dropped shots.
Overall the T4 finish has lifted Herbert up to 12th (1,202.6 points) on the Race to Dubai standings and to a career-best 49th in the world rankings.
The win at the Renaissance Club secured Australian Lee his second European Tour victory and is now 7th on the Race to Dubai Standings.
Lee started the day three shots behind leaders Detry and Fitzpatrick, but after a seven-strong birdie spree (six in a row) that started on the third he booked himself into the playoff.
The 22-year-old's opponents both made par on the first hole, while he sunk a 4m birdie putt to win the Rolex Series event and also a spot in this week's major, the British Open at Royal St George.
"It's just crazy, I've kind of dreamt of it last night and people back home staying up late to watch me, sending messages. This one is for you too," Lee said after the round.
After Herbert's win last week at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, he also secured a spot at St George, which will mark his fourth career major appearance.
