Construction of 14 supported independent living homes in Arnold Street, North Bendigo is set to begin by the end of the year and will provide safe, stable accommodation for people who require support to live independently.
Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Housing Richard Wynne announced the boost on Tuesday as part of the government's Big Housing Build.
"We're committed to building a mental health system that is tailored to the needs of Victorians," Mr Andrews said.
"That means delivering more services and care that supports Victorians at every stage of living with an illness."
Each of the one-bedroom homes will include self-contained kitchens, bathroom and laundry facilities along with a private courtyard or balcony.
The $4.8m project will create up to 40 construction jobs for people in Bendigo until the houses are completed in early 2023.

Mr Wynne said these homes may also reduce the number of homeless Victorians.
"Victorians with a mental illness are more likely to experience homelessness and our unprecedented investment in social and affordable housing will change lives," he said.
The homes are being delivered in partnership with the Haven Foundation, which is contributing almost $1.2 million towards the new homes.
Mind Australia will provide supported independent living services, to help residents live as independently as possible, while building their skills.
The Big Housing Build will deliver 2,000 homes for Victorians living with mental illness, ensuring provision of adequate housing - one of the recommendations in the final report of the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System.
The state government said it will implement all recommendations of the Royal Commission and has invested $3.8 billion in the Victorian Budget 2021/22 to begin implementation.
