Lee and Ben Roulston and Tara and Dee Ridsdale started the business as a way of putting a new spin on learning design, digital development and learning delivery.
"We honestly started off as a bunch of siblings and cousins who were passionate about educating people," Lee said.
"It started off with us working out of our spare rooms and lounge rooms, literally from nothing, and have grown into what we are now."
The team works with a number of clients to help upskill and educate their staff, but not in the way you think.
"We like to take a contemporary and creative approach when it comes to learning and teaching," she said.
"That's why when it came to this project for Multiplex, we definitely thought outside the box."
Multiplex approached the then team of seven to produce an induction model that would help staff learn about the health and safety protocols within the company.
"Over 18 months, we worked with a range of stakeholders to fully understand and produce a safety induction as an interactive video experience," Ben said.
"We determined that a 'choose your own adventure' style of learning was the best approach to drive home the importance of sound decision-making when it comes to safety.
"Using Multiplex team members, we shot videos for the module across four different states in different on-site locations.
"This gave many people across the business a moment to shine and an opportunity to convey an authentic safety message."
After completing the project, Lee said the team was proud of their efforts.
"It was a lot of long hours and hard work and we were very happy with what we had produced," she said.
"We'd received a lot of great feedback from the clients and that's when we got together with Multiplex and discussed entering ourselves in this award category."
The World Media Festival awards have been honouring media excellence on a global scale for the past 21 years, covering audiovisual, print and online productions from areas such as information, education and entertainment.
"When we were putting this video series together, we never thought it could win an award," Lee said.
"But once we were recognised on a national level with an AITD Best Use of Gamification/Simulation for Learning award, we thought why not try go bigger?
"Once we heard we had won gold, we honestly couldn't believe it."
But for the team at Thinka, their priority is staying grounded despite their success.
"We want to put our heart and soul into everything we do and we take our time to get things right," Ben said.
"We were all born and bred here in Bendigo and ultimately we would love to work with regional businesses who are ready to upskill.
"We know when employees feel safe in their workplaces, their level of productivity gets higher as well, so why wouldn't you want that in your business?"
