Only four central Victorian actors take to the MUIOOF Hall stage and carry a multi-character two-hour performance delving into the repercussions of marital affairs.
Opening with intriguing and complex dialogue which continues throughout the performance, the two mismatched couples circle around the same conversation, in similar situations with very different outcomes.
The first act follows the cogent and cunning couple of Leon and Sonja juxtaposing the fragile and desperate Pete and Jane, whose lives all become intertwine as they navigate lust, loyalty, fulfillment and hurt.
The stage is cut into two, with actors sharing dialogue of parallel conversations and moving around each other without interaction.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The second act revolves around the sub-plots hinted at in the first act; a missing women called Valerie, her anxious husband John, a besotted Neil and the cunning Sarah.
As the tale unravels what happened to Valerie, the new characters once again delve into their own twisted connections.
In particular, Kerry Turpie gives a compelling and heartbreaking performance of Valerie, an accomplished woman who's unravelling because of past traumas and a fractured relationship.
The script is clever, the acting is superb and the stripped-back set emphasises the intensity with the audiences clutching to every word.
This highly acclaimed play was turned into the 2001 film Lantana starring Anthony LaPaglia, Kerry Armstrong, Geoffrey Rush and Barbara Hershey and directed by Ray Lawrence.
Speaking in Tongues by Synchronicity Productions is an emotional, in-depth look into relationships and one play not to be missed.
