The 14-year-old boy appeared in a Children's Court on Wednesday after he was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
The court heard a Ford sedan was stolen during a Long Gully aggravated burglary on the morning of June 13.
About 3.45am the next day, a police officer allegedly saw the 14-year-old in the passenger seat of the stolen car on High Street in Kangaroo Flat.
Police alleged that the same Ford sedan was spotted several times speeding around the Bendigo area.
The court heard the vehicle was also allegedly involved in two petrol drive-offs and another attempted petrol theft.
The 14-year-old was arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday after he was reported as missing for about a week.
The informant told the court police were opposing bail because the teen was an unacceptable risk of reoffending and endangering the safety of the community.
The informant said while there was currently no DNA evidence linking the boy to the alleged crimes, police were still investigating.
The boy's defence lawyer told the court the prosecution did not have a strong case because there was no evidence, besides the police officer's statement, to support the allegations.
The lawyer said the officer allegedly saw the 14-year-old through the window of a moving vehicle when it was dark.
The lawyer also noted that the teen was not alleged to be the driver of the stolen car.
The magistrate acknowledged that those were valid points and a series of bail conditions could reduce the risks.
The magistrate granted the 14-year-old bail, but warned that if the boy did not comply with the conditions, he would be facing time in a youth justice centre.
The boy was released from custody. He is due to return to a Children's Court next week.
