Luis Suarez appeared to end a scoring drought for Uruguay that threatened to go a fifth straight game, although the strike may instead be attributed as an own goal to Arturo Vidal.
The 66th-minute equaliser cancelled out a 26th-minute Eduardo Vargas strike for Chile at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba.
The result means Chile can not finish bottom of the five-team group and will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Chile lead Group A with five points from three game.
Argentina have four points before their game against Paraguay later on Monday evening.
Paraguay are on three points, Uruguay have one and Bolivia are yet to register a point.
Uruguay tried to be aggressive at the start after four matches without scoring, a stretch including Copa America and World Cup qualifying competition.
Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo made two fine saves in the first 10 minutes before Vargas struck.
Playing a one-two with Ben Brereton on the right flank, Vargas entered the penalty box and flashed a right-foot effort past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and into the far corner of the goal.
The equaliser came from a corner which Matias Vecino nodded on at the near post and into the six-yard box.
Suarez held off the attentions of Vidal and appeared to get the final touch as he stretched out for a volley that directed the ball into the roof of the net - but some reports list the Chile midfielder as having scored an own goal.
Chile finished the game with 10 men after Erick Pulgar was injured and left the field in the 85th, after coach Martin Lasarte had already made all his substitutions.
Uruguay will play their third round-robin match on Thursday against Bolivia while Chile will wrap up their group commitments against Paraguay on the same evening.
