Fresh from the success of their murder mystery drama, Synchronicity Performing Arts is preparing to unveil its next show.
Speaking in Tongues, written by Australian playwright Andrew Bovell, was the basis for Australian film Lantana and examines the relationships in everyday people. It will star Saari Frochot-Chauhan, Kerry Turpie, Nick O'Meara, and Daniel Soncin. Ms Frochot-Chauhan was the driving force behind the play.
"It was something I was keen to do," she said. "This writer, Andrew Bovell, I love his work. It's really cleverly written for stage with overlapping dialogue and slowly unfolding story. You don't know what to expect from the overlapping connections between the characters.
"We have got a fabulous cast as well. You need a strong cast because everyone plays at least two characters and there's not a lot apart from the acting to show the difference in characters."
Ms Frochot-Chauhan said people who have seen Lantana shouldn't expect to see that film put on stage
"It's about relationships, extra marital relationships, everyday life and the decisions we make in life. It deals with lots of big topics," she said. "If you come expecting to see the movie, you will notice differences in the plot but more in the writing as well."
Following Synchornicity's last production, Ms Frochot-Chauhan said performers were eager to build on the energy they had at returning to the stage after coronavirus closed the arts sector in 2020.
"We didn't do any theatre with COVID last year," she said. "So when we came to end of our last show, we all thought 'what can we do next?' It was a pretty quick turnaround. Nothing was planned at that point and with COVID I thought it would be smart to do a show with a small cast."
Speaking in Tongues is set to open on July 2 at the MUIOOF Hall in Eaglehawk. Performances will be at 8pm on July 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 and 2pm on July 3 and 10. Visit The Capital or www.gotix.com for tickets.
