Sydney Boys High and John Paul College win major finals at Australian Schools Basketball Championships

Sydney Boys High School and Queensland’s girls team John Paul College have gone back-to-back after winning yesterday’s gold medal matches at the Australian Schools Basketball Championships at Bendigo Stadium.Sydney’s boys team comfortably triumphed against China’s under-16 national team, 79-53.The New South Wales school swept all before it this week and was undefeated after it dominated the Chinese from quarter-time.Leading by six points at the first change, Sydney turned it on in the second quarter to outscore China by 21 points.It was more of the same in the third period as Sydney extended its buffer to 39 points by the final change, before easing off in the fourth quarter.Christian Jurlina top-scored for Sydney with 25 points, while team-mate Emmett Naar hit 23.In the girls’ gold medal match, John Paul College delivered when it counted with a game-breaking final quarter to win 61-53 against Box Hill SC.The Queenslanders trailed by two points at three-quarter time in a tightly-contested match, but blew the game open with a 21 to 11 last term.Kalani Purcell top-scored with 15 points for the victors, while Olivia Bontempelli scored 14 for Box Hill.Meanwhile, Catholic College Bendigo junior 1-2 division girls picked up silver after losing to Rowville Secondary College 56-28 in the final.Rowville’s Rachel Brewster top-scored for the match with eight points, while Bendigo’s Monica Wellington and Ayrlie Bailey-Mcclanahan each scored six.Bendigo Senior Secondary College won the boys senior division five bronze medal match 44-33 against Kingsway Christian College.BSSC led by one point at half-time before extending the advantage to 10 by the final break.After a first-round loss to St Patrick’s, the Kevin Probert-coached BSSC hit back to win all its pool matches.Macleod College dominated the semi-final, but the Lions fired up in the play-off for bronze.The Lions’ best throughout the week were Jarrod Kerwin, Aaron Bimpson, Andy Regan, Lonain Burnett and Matt Gray.Wedderburn College’s boys junior division five team won the gold medal in the boys junior division five 48-29 against Maitland High School, while the College’s girls senior 4-5 team lost its bronze medal game 62-24.Bendigo South East Secondary College won bronze in the junior girls division five play-off.The Flora Hill-based BSE Dragons won 40-25 against Wedderburn College to cap a great week as Bendigo hosted the national championships in consecutive years.
