A veteran of 255 AFL games with Port Adelaide, St Kilda and the Hawks, Guerra hasn't played footy for two years and the Demons are in no rush to get him into their side.
The 39-year-old works with coach Sam Kerridge and was keen to get back involved in club footy.
"Brent is keen to come and have a run and we'll see how he goes,'' Kerridge said.
"He's keen to keep fit and we won't be putting any pressure on him. Whether he plays or not we'll wait and see.
"He'll get to training, mingle with the boys and have a kick.
"I'd rather have him in our list than not. He'll be great to have around the club and his experience will be great for us."
Originally from Koondrook and a product of the Bendigo Pioneers, Guerra played 65 games for Port Adelaide between 2000-2003 before crossing to St Kilda for 31 games in two seasons.
The Hawks snapped up the left-footer leading into the 2006 season.
Guerra played in Hawthorn's 2008 premiership side and his final game at AFL level was the Hawks' 2013 grand final win over Fremantle.
The Guerra signing comes 48 hours before the Demons host Lockington-Bamawm United in the clash of the HDFNL's two unbeaten teams.
The restrictions on Melbournians travelling to regional Victoria means Kerridge and star forward Jed Lamb won't play for the Demons.
"With a few out this week it will give a few young boys the chance to step up and play senior footy,'' Kerridge said.
"We're waiting on a couple of others that work in Melbourne. We're doing our due diligence to make sure those players haven't been to any of the spots.
"Lockington is travelling well, so it would have been nice to play against them in a big first versus second contest.
"Can't do much about it. The great thing is that footy is back. Everyone's missed it the past couple of weeks, so it will be good to get everyone back out on the park."
Playing assistant coach Jack Fallon will take over the coaching reins from Kerridge on Saturday.
Kerridge is expecting an anxious couple of hours on Saturday afternoon.
"I can't sit still and I don't cope at the best of times, let alone a game where I can't attend,'' Kerridge said.
"The boys better keep their phones on, I'll be ringing every five minutes for updates."
