A weather warning issued by BOM this evening included Bendigo, Maryborough and Castlemaine in the locations expected to be affected by a low pressure system developing over central Bass Strait.
The pressure system is expected to move north over central Victoria during Wednesday morning.
Damaging southerly winds are set to average speeds between 50 and 60km/h in western parts of the warning area early on Wednesday with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h.
Those winds will then extend to central and eastern parts of the warning area during Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Another low developing off the southern NSW coast will grow as it reaches the east Gippsland coast on Wednesday night. Winds will average up to 70km/h with peak gusts of 110km/h
Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Bendigo, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Melbourne and Traralgon.
The State Emergency Service advises people should pull over away from trees and low lying areas if driving conditions become dangerous, avoid hazards such as floodwater, mud and debris and beware of damaged trees.
People should also ensure loose items such as outdoor settings and trampolines are secure, vehicles are undercover and urged to stay indoors while staying informed.
The next severe weather warning is expected by 11pm, Tuesday.
