The Victorian Government is working with the City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Heritage Attractions on the $10.7 million expansion, which will allow Bendigo Tramways to increase the number of trams they restore.
Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said Bendigo Tramways was a centre for excellence in heritage rolling stock restoration and a leading provider of tram restoration services in Australia.
"Bendigo Tramways' workshops are currently at capacity and this expansion will enable them to respond to growing demand for their specialist restoration services," she said.
"Bendigo Tramways is already a highly successful business, and the project will allow them to increase their operations and employ more local people in the heart of Bendigo."

The expansion will create additional storage and workshop space and includes constructing a new purpose-built facility, with upgraded equipment to restore and manufacture heritage rolling stock.
The project also seeks to improve the visitor experience at Bendigo Tramways, which is a key part of central Victoria's tourism offering.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the expansion will enhance one of the region's key features.
"The Bendigo community will benefit from the transformation of previously neglected land into a valuable asset for the city," she said.
"I encourage local people to go online or visit Bendigo Tramways if they're keen to find out more about the project."
Local architects Y2 Architecture have been appointed to lead the design of the redevelopment.
Minister for Regional Development Mary Anne Thomas said the expansion will create more jobs and generating economic activity in central Victoria.
"The expansion will support skilled manufacturing jobs in central Victoria and create new ongoing positions, safeguarding the future of Victoria's heritage restoration sector," she said.
