Bendigo Health chairman Bob Cameron said community consultation was an essential part when creating a strategic plan.

"Feedback also helps determine areas for improvement with information used to evaluate Bendigo Health's strategic performance in the last three years," he said.

Mr Cameron said the strategic plan outlines the priorities for the health service, now, and for the future.

He said the current plan expires this year with a new three year document to be launched in 2022.

"Last time we did (our strategic plan) the community told us that they wanted to make the best use of the new hospital, improve and continue to build services," he said.

"We are now a regional centre of excellence in cancer care, heart care and one of the things we would love to see in the next plan is to become a regional centre of excellence in pediatric care.

"We want to make sure that we hear from people about how we can extract the best value from this facility when it's finished."

Mr Cameron hoped the work would begin just before Christmas.

Bendigo Health outpatient rehabilitation manager, Wendy Millar said part of the old Bendigo Health hospital site will be transformed into a state of the art outpatient children's facility.

"We do want to focus on pediatrics but we also do want to consult with the community," she said.

"We want more services to be delivered in Bendigo and we want more services to delivered to younger children.

"We can make a difference in children's lives that is lifelong so by having input there it allows those children to grow into adults that can be part of the community and that will be good for everyone in the long run."

Ms Millar hoped the new space would be an inviting one for children and families.
