The season will last 20 days, ending on June 14 and Goulburn-Murray Water is reminding hunters to familiarise themselves with designated hunting areas.
GMW manager water storage services Martina Cusack asked hunters to be aware of other water users and residents when hunting at the rural water providers storages.
"Our water storages are used by many people for a range of activities, and it's important that you consider other members of the public and the environment by acting in a safe and responsible manner at all times," she said.
"Duck hunters should also be aware that private property can adjoin GMW land, waterways and storages, and hunters are required to seek the consent of landholders to hunt or pass through private property."
Hunting the Blue-winged Shoveler or along the GMW channel network are not permitted during the season. The use of firearms and hunting in public recreational areas and around storage assets is also prohibited, as is camping.
Victoria Police works with the Game Management Authority to provide an enforcement presence during the duck hunting season.
Acting Superintendent Paul Marshall urged shooters to remind themselves of the specific legislative requirements for the safekeeping of firearms and cartridge ammunition.
"Police are running localised operations during the duck hunting season, focusing on issues such as firearm licensing, registration, storage and safety, as well as detecting any other criminal offences," he said.
"If you're a licensed firearm owner, plan ahead to ensure your gun and ammunition is stored carefully and correctly at all times.
"Take care to avoid leaving firearms or ammunition stored at unoccupied premises or in vehicles.
"Failure to comply with firearm storage requirements can result in penalties or even imprisonment, but the consequences can be far worse if your firearm is lost or stolen."
