The data released by the Australian Road Safety Foundation comes from a national survey completed in April.

Of those surveyed, the foundation said 47 per cent of regional Victorians admitted to driving over the speed limit.

The most common reason given for speeding was inattention, while the next most popular excuse was the person believed it was safe to drive over the limit.

The survey results on broken road rules have been released ahead of the foundation's 'Fatality Free Friday', being held on May 28. This is the campaign's 15^th year.

"Individuals have a responsibility to make the right choices when using the roads and it is imperative they understand the devastating consequences their choices can have not just on other road users, but on the wider community," foundation chief executive Russell White said.
