Last week Bignold Park residents were given notice to vacate the supported residential service within 31 days.

A Department of Families, Fairness and Housing spokesperson said its Human Service Regulator had been in regular contact with the service about its ability to meet its legislated obligations.

The spokesperson said the regulator believed Bignold Park was not financially viable.

They said the regulator felt there were risks to residents' safety and wellbeing.

The spokesperson said that at a meeting with the regulator the proprietor of Bignold Park agreed to voluntarily close the business, and work with the department and local community health providers to support residents to find alternative accommodation.

Owned by Florentino Health Care Services Pty Ltd, Bignold Park was home to residents with a mix of disability, mental health and aged care related needs.

The facility's owner told the Bendigo Advertiser on Friday that government gave her two choices: either close voluntarily within six weeks, or involuntarily in two - because her finances were not viable.

Supported residential service are a state responsibility, regulated by the Human Services Regulator which is part of the newly created Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

Victoria's public advocate has raised "serious concerns" about the wellbeing of residents in such facilities, saying they are "ill-equipped" to care for the complex needs of their residents.

Public Advocate Colleen Pearce said supported residential services were originally designed as private accommodation with limited support, for people who were frail and elderly but not yet ready for nursing home care.
