The PGA Tour event at Quail Hollow saw Herbert shoot a five-over par opening round to sit 138th on the leaderboard.
The Neangar Park golfer started the day with an opening birdie on the par-five 10th, his only under-par hole for the day.
Starting on the back-nine he then carded five pars and three bogeys to finish the first half of the day at two-over.
He was unable to get his head back above water on the front-nine, carding six pars and three bogeys to finish at five-over for the day.
Matt Jones was the best of the Australians at two-under, followed by Cameron Davis (-1), Jason Day (+1) and Cameron Percy (+1).
The overnight leader was Phil Mickelson who carded a seven-under, followed by Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Keegan Bradley (-5).
Herbert tees up in round two at 4.22AM AEST on Saturday morning.
