Racing in Athletics Australia's 3000m championship, Buchanan ran a superb time of 7:55.86 to be sixth overall and second-best Victorian in the field of 15 athletes.
The previous Bendigo residential record for 3000m at open level was 8:03 set by Echuca's Malcolm Norwood in 1984 at Melbourne's Olympic Park.
In Thursday's showdown at Box Hill, Buchanan was up against track stars from Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, and New South Wales.
It was a Queensland trifecta as Jack Bruce won gold in 7:51.81 from Maroons' team-mates Jude Thomas, 7:52.11; and Ryan Gregson, 7:52.81.
Tasmania's James Hansen charged to fourth place in 7:53.49 ahead of Victorian trio David McNeill, 7:55.44; Andy Buchanan, 7:55.86; and Andre Waring, 7:55.89.
The Gold Coast Marathon in early July is a target for Buchanan this year.
Gold Coast's running festival is on July 3-4 and draws thousands of competitors for events of various distances.
A dual national 10km cross-country champion and multiple winner of the Bendigo Bank Dragon Mile, Buchanan has twice won a monthly award in Bendigo's Sports Star of the Year.
