The 28-year-old appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court after he was charged with offences including criminal damage and breaching a family violence safety notice.
The notice was issued on April 15 this year, with the man's former partner listed as the protected person.
The court heard on the morning of April 21, the man was at home with the woman when he allegedly became angry and verbally abusive.
Police alleged the man threatened to kill himself before threatening the victim and smashing a glass onto the bathroom floor.
The man was allegedly holding a tomahawk during the incident.
The court heard the victim was frightened and fled the property. When she returned later that day, she saw the man had left but the bathroom door was damaged.
The man handed himself in to the Bendigo Police Station on April 23. The court was told the man made some admissions but denied damaging the door.

The accused's defence lawyer told the court while her client knew the allegations were serious, there was a factual dispute about the damage to the door.
The lawyer said the man had no intention of restarting a relationship with the victim and would follow a full family violence intervention order.
Magistrate Patrick Southey indicated he would sentence the man to one month in jail with a community corrections order if he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The accused did not accept the indication and will instead contest the charges in court next month. His bail was extended to his next court date.
