THE stranglehold of all-rounders dominating the BDCA's Cricketer of the Year award has been broken by not one, but two batsmen.
Strathdale-Maristians' Jack Neylon and Sandhurst captain Joel Murphy tied for the BDCA's top honour on Wednesday night, each polling 17 votes in the season of all one-day matches.
Neylon and Murphy - both 23 - are the first pure batsmen to have won the award since Sandhurst's Nick Scullie in 2006-07.
For Suns' No.4 batsman Neylon, his win caps a fairytale season in which he was a key member of Strathdale-Maristians' undefeated premiership team.
The hard-hitting Neylon amassed 577 runs at an average of 38.4 in the home and away season and later smashed a quickfire 43 off just 30 balls in the Suns' grand final win over Kangaroo Flat.
Meanwhile, Murphy was rewarded for a season in which he was the BDCA's leading run-scorer.
Murphy revelled in his first season as Dragons' captain, with the opening batsman compiling 697 runs at an average of 46.4, including six scores above 50 from his 15 hits.
Murphy polled votes in six games and Neylon seven games, with the pair having played plenty of previous Northern Rivers representative cricket together.
Huntly-North Epsom's Sandun Ranathunga was one vote back on 16.
