POLICE believe the driver of the car that crashed into a tree in Marong this morning might have suffered a medical episode.
Leading Senior Constable Peter Dyer, of Bendigo Highway Patrol, said the dual-cab Holden ute was travelling south on the Calder Alternative Highway when it ran off the road and crashed into a tree.
The driver, a 61-year-old Wedderburn man, was the vehicle's sole occupant.
Emergency services worked for about an hour to free the man from the car.
Leading Senior Constable Dyer said the man was airlifted to Melbourne's The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Update, 9.30am
A MAN has been rescued after a car crashed into a tree at Marong earlier this morning.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man was in a stable condition with chest injuries.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was being loaded into an air ambulance headed for a Melbourne hospital.

EMERGENCY services are responding to a crash at Marong.
Police received the call to the Calder Alternative Highway, near Bullock Road, about 8am.
Emergency services were still working to rescue a man, who was trapped in the vehicle, shortly before 9am.
The car is believed to have crashed into a tree.
