The Bendigo Cricket Club product was joined by Sandhurst premiership player Todd Murphy in a squad of 13 for the final Shield match of the season, starting Saturday at the Junction Oval.
If one or both of the duo makes their debut they will be the first BDCA players to play Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria since Bendigo United's Craig White played for the Vics in the early 1990s.
Seymour won the Ryder Medal in Victorian Premier Cricket last summer and backed up with another superb season for Essendon.
The left-hander made a league best 822 runs, including three centuries, at an average of 91.
Bendigo Cricket Club coach Tony Ryan said Seymour deserved a crack at the next level.
"We're extraordinarily happy for Jimmy and his family,'' an elated Ryan said.
"He's one of the hardest working and most diligent cricketers I've ever come across. He's left no stone unturned to get this opportunity.
"All he's wanted to be is a Shield cricketer and he finally gets that chance.
"It's all come down to hard work and effort."
Seymour's form with Essendon led to a late call-up with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, but he didn't get the chance to play a game at that level.
With Victoria unable to qualify for the Shield final, Saturday's clash with the Redbacks seems a perfect opportunity for the Vics to blood some new talent.
"James has been a leading run scorer in Premier Cricket for a number of seasons now and has earned this opportunity through his consistent form," Victorian chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch said.
Off-spinner Murphy made his one-day debut for Victoria in March and didn't look out of place.
"Todd was impressive in his one-day debut and we're keen to see how he adjusts to the longer format should the opportunity arise,'' Lynch said.
